Why Public Transportation

Public transit and community transportation connect people to places and opportunities. They help support vibrant communities and promote mobility for all citizens regardless of income or ability. In moving people, these critically needed elements of our infrastructure also help move our local and regional economies. 


In New Hampshire public transportation consist of buses, minivans, vans, volunteers driving their own vehicles, and in the seacoast, the Amtrak Downeaster train.

  • In FY2023, over 2.1 million trips were taken on public transit and community transportation.
  • Public transportation's annual economic impact is estimated at greater than $110,000,000 and our service providers directly employ more than 300 individuals statewide. 
  • Public transit providers operate 200+ vehicles in 42 New Hampshire communities which contain over 51% of the resident population of the state.
  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding supports 24 public transit and community transportation providers across the state. 
  • Over 99.99% of all public transit trips are provided without a reportable safety event.

Public transportation allows users to affordably travel when and where they want. Public transportation facilitates older adults being able to age in place longer. Public transportation enables non-drivers to spread their wings and/or avoid the cost of car ownership.
